Here We Go, Steelers, Here We Go!
As part of the AFC North, the Pittsburgh Steelers are located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania are the oldest team in the AFC being founded in 1933 by Art Rooney. They were originally founded as the Pittsburgh Pirates and did not change their name to the Steelers until 1945.In 1969, after the teams joining with the Eagles due to World War II and the lack of players on their roster, the Steelers hired Chuck Noll as head coach. By the 1970's, they became the only team in NFL history to win four Super Bowls in six years. Noll retired in 1992 and Bill Cowher was hired to succeed him. Cowher was able to lead the Steelers to the playoffs in each of his first six seasons with the team as well as three AFC Championship games and a Super Bowl appearance in 1995.
He resigned in 2007 and the Steelers gained Mike Tomlin as their new head coach who is still coaching them today. With Tomlin, the team has won the Super Bowl championship in 2008 and has made a playoff appearance almost every year since 2001. They have played all their home games at Heinz Field since their opening day on August 18, 2001, representing their team and city in their black, gold, and white uniforms. In March of 2013, the Steelers signed Bruce Gradkowski as quarterback behind current quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. Roethlisberger has been with the Steelers ever since they signed him in 2004, back when he was third string quarterback behind Tommy Maddox and Charlie Batch. He began starting near the end of the 2004 season and onward as he has helped the on its upward spiral ever since the beginning of the 2000's.
Along with the Dallas Cowboys, the Steelers hold the record for most Super Bowl appearances with their most recent being in 2010. They have also won the most Super Bowl championships (the most of any team in the NFL), 8 AFC championships, and played in 20 division championships. With multiple rivals within their own division, the Steelers will have heavy competitors as they enter the preseason games.
With the new season underway, the Steelers have now placed Gradkowski as their first string quarterback as well as signed on nine new players from the 2014 draft. Their first round pick went to linebacker Ryan Shazier from Ohio State. Due to his speed, versatility, and ability to play in different spaces, Shazier is open to choices as to his positions on the field. In the second round, they chose defensive end Stephon Tuitt from Notre Dame. Tuitt is known for blocking and making his tackles which is very beneficial to the lineup of the eagles. For the rest of their choices, the Steelers chose running back Dri Archer from Kent State, wide receiver Martavis Bryant from Clemson, cornerback Shaquille Richardson from Arizona, offensive tackle Wesley Johnson from Vanderbilt, linebacker Jordan Zumwalt from UCLA, defensive tackle Daniel McCullers from Tennessee, and tight end Rob Blanchflower from UMass. Shazier, Tuitt, and Archer could be a very powerful trio if put on the field, as well as the other new rookies. Pittsburgh's team is slowly readying themselves for their preseason game against the New York Giants.
