Commonly referred to as the Pats, the New England Patriots are a professional football team from the Greater Boston area and they play their home games at Gillette Stadium, located in Foxborough, Massachusetts. They were originally founded as the Boston Patriots in 1959 and after moving to Foxborough in 1971, the team changed their name to the New England Patriots. Their team was originated when Billy Sullivan was given the final franchise of the AFL and immediately after, he made the Patriots team. With their establishment in 1959, the Pats were members of the AFL and switched over to the NFL with the AFL-NFL merger in 1970. They had their first Super Bowl appearance in 1986 after making it to the playoffs four previous times, eventually losing to the Chicago Bears. They had their second appearance in 1997 but they were defeated again, this time by the Green Bay Packers. When the AFL and NFL merged in 1970, the Pats were placed in the AFC East division which they have been members of ever since.
In the early 1980's, the Sullivan family, who had been the owners of the team since its inaugural season in 1959, lost millions of dollars and due to this, they were forced to sell the team to Remington Products magnate Victor Kiam in 1988. Under new management, the 1989 season for the Pats was miserable as they ended their season 5-11. 1990 didn't prove to be any better when they ended 1-15, their worst in franchise history. The 1990's were a period of decline for the Pats as they didn't have any significant plays until 1997 when they got a division championship. In 2000, the Pats hired head coach Bill Belichick, who is still their current coach. With his addition to the team, they have become one of the most successful teams in NFL history. Tied with the Dallas Cowboys, the Pats won three out of four Super Bowls and finished 2007 with a perfect season. Quarterback Tom Brady was also drafted the same season that Belichick was hired as head coach and together, they make an unbeatable duo. For the 2011 draft, the Patriots chose Ryan Mallett to be the number two quarterback behind Tom Brady. In June of 2013, Tim Tebow signed a two year contract as the second quarterback for the team but was released in August of 2013.
Already a dominant team in the league, having five consecutive playoff appearances since 2009, the Patriots chose nine strong players from the draft to be added to their team. In the first round, they chose defensive lineman Dominique Easley from Florida. Although Easley had a shortened season in 2013 due to a torn ACL, he still one of the quickest and toughest players Florida had. With their second round pick, the Patriots chose quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo from Eastern Illinois. Tom Brady will always remain the starting quarterback, Garoppolo can still learn a lot from fellow teammate. With Brady's age and Mallett's uncertainty to stay on the team, Garoppolo could be a perfect backup for the Pats. In the fourth round, they chose center Bryan Stork from Florida State, running back James White from Wisconsin, and offensive tackle Cameron Fleming from Stanford. The remaining four picks were guard Jon Halapio from Florida, defensive end Zach Moore from Concordia-St. Paul, cornerback Jemea Thomas from Georgia Tech, and wide receiver Jeremy Gallon from Michigan. With one of the best draft picks, the Patriots and their fans are eager for the season to start with their first game against the Washington Redskins.
