As one of the Original Six NHL Teams, the Chicago Blackhawks are located in Chicago, Illinois and are currently the defending Stanley Cup Champions. When they were first founded in 1926, they played their home games at the Chicago Stadium for about 65 years before moving to the United Center in 1994. They're members of Division B of the Western Conference of the NHL and have won five Stanley Cup championships since their establishment. They joined the NHL as part of the league's expansion into the US, along with the Detroit Cougars and the New York Rangers. The Hawks, as they are commonly called, had a slow start until 1934 when they had their first Cup win. Four years later, they got their second Cup championship when they defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Hawks are known for having the poorest regular season record of any Stanley Cup ever since their first win in 1934. In 1972, the World Hockey Association started up and many NHL players who weren't satisfied switched on over to the WHA. Through the 1980's, the Blackhawks made it into the playoffs but made early-round exits each year. The 20th century ended for the Hawks with many trades from the team but the 21st century started with disappointment as they were said to be “out of the playoffs until the 2008-2009 season.”
In 2004, ESPN named them the worst franchise in professional sports for not being able to make it past the playoffs. With all this negativity, towards the team, the Hawks were determined to prove their fans and other teams wrong and they were able to do so when their long time owner, Bill Wirtz, passed away and his son, Rocky, succeeded him. With Rocky as the new owner, he made changes to alter his father's previous policies. For the 2007-2008 season, he had Comcast SportsNet Chicago air some of the Hawks home games on television and by the next year, Comcast was airing all of the team's regular season games. Aside from the team's social image, Rocky also attempted in rebuilding the team and added Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane to the team. These two additions proved to be very beneficial to the team with Toews led all the rookies in the goals scored and Kane led all the rookies in total points. The 2007-2008 season marked the first season that the Hawks were able to finish above .500 and only missed the playoffs by three points. They were slowly going on an upward spiral and the next season, they finished second in their division and by the 2009-2010 season, the Hawks brought the Stanley Cup home to Chicago once again. Just two years later, they won the Cup for the fifth time when they beat the Boston Bruins in the finals. As the defending champions, the Hawks are going strong as they prepare for the 2013-2014 season.
