Founded in 1960 as part of the AFL, the Oakland Raiders are based in Oakland, California and are now members of the AFC West in the NFL. In their first few seasons, the Raiders didn't have much success until appointing Al Davis as head coach. With Davis, the team had their first and only AFL title in 1967 but lost to the Green Bay Packers. In the 1970's, the Raiders success skyrocketed as they played in six AFC championship games and in 1976, got their first championship title by defeating the Vikings in their first NFL Super Bowl game. In 1983, the team moved to Los Angeles and while there, their victory declined and they moved back to Oakland in 1995. The Oakland Raiders, in their silver and black uniforms, are known for their enormous fan base and their team culture that spreads throughout the nation. Since their establishment in 1960, the team has won 15 division titles, three Super Bowls, four AFC titles, and one AFL championship when they still existed.
In 2002, the position of head coach was given to Bill Callahan who was previously the team's offensive coordinator and offensive line coach when Gruden was head coach. With Callahan as head coach, the Raiders made their way back up and won their third straight division title in 2002 ending the season 11-5. 2003 wasn't as great as the previous year when the Raiders finished 4-12 and by the end of the season, Callahan was fired and replaced by former Redskins head coach Norv Turner. The team didn't seem to improve much with Norv and in 2006, Art Shell returned as head coach from previously being fired in 1995 by Davis. The head coach in 2012 was Dennis Allen, going through three other head coaches in the past 5 years. With Allen as coach, the 2012 season finished with a 4-12 record, having the same finishing record the year after in 2013. However The Denver Broncos, their division rivals since the two teams began playing together in 1960, are in competition for the league title as they both compete for the championship title. After much practice during the off season, Allen along with quarterback Matt Flynn and the rest of the team are ready for a new season.
With one of the best draft seasons in their franchise history, the Raiders have added eight new players to their team. With their first round pick, manager Reggie McKenzie chose outside linebacker Khalil Mack from Buffalo. In many of the mock drafts, Mack was predicted to be one of the higher first round picks, in which he did end up being. He was selected fifth overall, making him the highest selected Buffalo Bulls player since 1964. Their second round choice was quarterback Derek Carr from Fresno State who was a huge pick for the Raiders. His brother, David Carr, was a number one overall pick in 2002 with the Texans and he seems to be following closely behind in his footsteps. He was selected as one of the most competitive quarterbacks in this draft season and will be starting games based on his abilities during the preseason. With their remaining draft picks, Raiders chose guard Gabe Jackson from Mississippi State, defensive tackle Justin Ellis from Louisiana Tech, cornerback Keith McGill from Utah, cornerback Travis Carrie from Ohio, defensive end Shelby Harris from Illinois State, and safety Jonathan Dowling from Western Kentucky. The Raiders had their last playoff appearance in 2002 but now with bigger and stronger offensive line, they're hopeful in making a comeback, starting with their preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings
