Holding the record for the most championships in the franchise, the Boston Celtics are based in Boston, Massachusetts and play in the Eastern Conference of the NBA. They play their games at TD Garden which they share with the NHL Bruins. The Celtics were founded in 1946 by Walter Brown who was the President of the Boston Garden-Arena Corporation. They signed Chuck Cooper in 1950, becoming the first franchise to draft an African American player. Like many other beginning teams, the Celtics struggled in their play in the beginning until the team hired head coach Arnold Jacob Auerbach, commonly referred to as “Red.” When he started as coach, he did everything himself from running practice, scouting new players and scheduling all their road trips for away games. During his time as coach, Bob Cousy was signed who became one of the greatest players in Celtics history. In 1957, the Celtics made their way to the NBA Finals and received their first of many championships as they defeated the St. Louis Hawks. They made it to the finals the following year as well but were defeated by the Hawks. To turn things around, KC Jones was drafted that same year and helped the team win their way through the finals the following year. During that time, they were known as one of the most dominant teams in the franchise, winning two NBA Final championships within a 10 year span.
Late in the 1950's, they signed Bill Russell who later replaced Auerbach when he retired as coach and became general manager. Russell became the first African American coach in any professional sport and helped the Celtics get 11 championships in his 13 seasons as “player-coach.” He retired in 1969, ending the team's streak that they had going. In the year following his retirement, the team saw their first losing season in 20 years. But they turned their luck around after signing Dave Cowens, Paul Silas, and Jo Jo White and they became the dominant team that they once were. Late into the 1970's, the Celtics signed Larry Bird who became a key player for the team. He helped make up the “Big Three” which consisted of Bird, Robert Parish, and Kevin McHale. The Big Three had its glory days in late 2000 to 2012 where they went on to win the NBA finals in 2008 and division titles every year from 2008-2012. Aside from the Big Three, the Celtics drafted Paul Pierce in the 1998 NBA Draft who proved to be a dominant member of the team. Nicknamed “The Truth,” Pierce went on the become the 2008 NBA Finals MVP and was named to the 2009 NBA All-Star Game. In June of 2013, he was traded to the Brooklyn Nets where he will be starting the new season. Celtics received new head coach Brad Stevens in July of 2013 to replace Doc Rivers, starting fresh for a new year and new season.
