Known amongst their fans as “Big Red,” the Arizona Cardinals are the oldest professional American football team in the United States. Founded in 1898 in Chicago, IL, the Cardinals have been members of the NFL since its founding in 1920, being one of two teams who are still active. Ever since 2002, they have been members of the National Football Conference (NFC) Western Division in the National Football League (NFL). In their earlier days, before they were in any sort of official league, the Cardinals would play in the neighborhood parks and would call themselves the Morgan Athletic Club. A few years later, they were discovered by Chris O'Brien who was able to help the Cardinals become the team that they are today. It was O'Brien who gave the team their cardinal red, white, and black colors that they wear on their uniforms. Being in one of the busiest cities in the nation, the Cardinals popularity and fan base grew as well as the team itself as they drafted new members.
Before moving to Arizona in 1988, the Cardinals moved from Chicago to St. Louis, Missouri in 1960 where they stayed for about 30 years. While in St. Louis, the team only advanced to the playoffs three times with no winning appearances. However, with only three playoff wins, the teams overall record in Missouri is the highest winning percentage out of the three locations that they have been based in. (Chicago, St. Louis, Phoenix) In 1988, the team made their final move to Phoenix, Arizona which has been their home ever since. They have been playing their home games at the University of Phoenix Stadium ever since it was built in 2006. They've been to the playoffs six times and won six playoff games as well as four division titles since their last appearance in the NFL championship in 1947. In 2012, the Cardinals drafted Ryan Lindley who attended San Diego State University to replace Carson Palmer. With the help of their new quarterback, Ryan Lindley, and their 7 time Pro Bowl wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, the Arizona Cardinals hope to start their pre-season strong as they play their first game against the Green Bay Packers.
In the first round of the 2014 draft, the Cardinals chose Washington State Safety Deone Bucannon. This adds to their already strong defensive line of Patrick Peterson, Antonio Cromartie, and Tyrann Mathieu. For the second and third round, tight end Troy Niklas from Notre Dame, defensive end Kareem Martin from North Carolina, and wide receiver John Brown from Pittsburg State were chosen. For the last three rounds, the Cardinals selected quarterback Logan Thomas from Virginia Tech, defensive end Ed Stinson from Alabama, and wide receiver Walt Powell from Murray State. Coach Bruce Arias along with the rest of the team is ready for a strong season with the newly added players to take on the Houston Texans in their preseason game.
