Based in Seattle, Washington, the Seattle Seahawks are members of the NFC West and they officially joined the NFL in 1976 as an expansion team granted to their home state. They are the only team to have played in the AFC and NFC Championship Games, however, they have only one Super Bowl appearance in 2006 where they lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers. When the NFL first gave the city their expansion franchise, they were signed on by Lloyd Nordstrom, who owned the majority of the team, but he passed away before the Seahawks could play their first game. He was soon after replaced by John Thompson and the Seahawks played their first game in 1976 against the 49ers in their brand new stadium, the Kingdome. They played their until 1999, but during that 23 year period, the Kingdome was the loudest stadium in the NFL because of the piercing cries and cheers from their fans. It was then that the team decided to retire the number 12 and since then, #12 jerseys have been sold nationwide with “Fan” written on the back. This gave the team the nickname of having a 12th man, which is in reference to their fans that largely impacted how the team plays.
The team currently plays at CenturyLink Field, which has been their home stadium since 2002 where it is home to the Seattle Sounders FC of MLS as well. When the team began playing in 1976, they were members of the NFC West but later, switched conferences and joined the AFC West but by 2002, they went back to joining the NFC West, becoming the only NFL team to switch conferences twice in the post-merger era. The Seahawks have had seven Division Championships and 12 Playoff Appearances, their most recent being in 2012. In 2010, the team made history by making it into the playoffs, even though their season record was 7-9. They lost to the Bears in their second game but the Seahawks are still fighting for another appearance in the Super Bowl and this time, to bring home a championship. With rookie quarterback Russell Wilson who replaced Tarvaris Jackson as first string, the Seahawks ended their 2012 season with a 12-6 record.
Defending Super Bowl champions, the Seahawks are hopeful to continue on their streak. Although they didn’t have a first round pick, general manager John Schneider still picked strong players. Their second round picks consisted of wide receiver Paul Richardson from Colorado and offensive tackle Justin Britt from Missouri. Along with Richardson and Britt were defensive end Cassius Marsh from UCLA, wide receiver Kevin Norwood from Colorado, linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis from Boston College, defensive tackle Jimmy Staten from Tennessee State, offensive tackle Garrett Scott from Marshall, cornerback Eric Pinkins from San Diego State, and fullback Kiero Small from Arkansas. The Seahawks went into the draft wanting to choose the biggest, strongest, and fastest men they could and they did so. Having yet another challenging 2014 schedule, the Seahawks are set to start their preseason against the Denver Broncos.
