How 'Bout them Cowboys?
Founded in 1960 as part of the NFL, the Dallas Cowboys are members of the NFC East and are are located in Irving, Texas. Up until 2008, they played at Texas Stadium and once Cowboys Stadium was built a year later, they moved into their newer and bigger arena. Representing their well known colors of royal blue, silver, navy, and white, the Cowboys have a streak of 160 sold-out postseason and regular games beginning in 1990 continuing until their season today. They currently hold the record for the most Super Bowl appearances, tied at eight with the Pittsburgh Steelers. They are however, the only NFL team to have 20 consecutive winning seasons from 1965-1985. As of the 2012 season, they are the highest valued sports franchise in the US and the wealthiest football team in the NFL.
When the Cowboys were added to the NFL, they were the first modern-era expansion team to date. With the addition of a new team in Texas, Redskins owner, George Marshall, had strong opposition because up until then, his team was the monopoly as the only NFL team to represent southern America. In retaliation, Cowboys owners Clint Murchison and Bedford Wynne purchased the rights to the Redskins fight song, "Hail to the Redskins," ending with the Redskins giving in and allowing the city of Dallas, Texas to have their first NFL franchise. This was the beginning to one of the most heated NFL rivalries that still exists today. Before becoming known as the Cowboys, or "Cowgirls" that many Redskins fans refer to them as, they were known as the Dallas Steers and the Dallas Rangers.
By the end of the 1990's the Cowboys had been the main competition amongst the other teams in their division as they all fought for the division title, with the Cowboys winning it almost every year. Into the 2000's era, they drafted key players including their current quarterback Tony Romo, Miles Austin, Jason Witten, DeMarcus Ware, Tyron Smith, and many others as they continue to be a competition to the rest of the NFL. Having such a strong and talented team brought in many fans not just within the state but nationwide. Their Thanksgiving Day games helped bring in popularity to the team across the nation, which also fuels the rivalry with the Redskins even more. Aside from the Redskins, the Eagles are also rivals from within the same division as well as the Steelers, who they are tied with at the most Super Bowl appearances. With Jason Garrett as their head coach since 2010, the team is hopeful for another playoff appearance with the upcoming season and ready to face their rivals of more than 50 years, the Washington Redskins.
The 2014 draft will be one that Cowboys fans will be talking about for many months to come. With their first round choice, they chose offensive tackle Zack Martin from Notre Dame. This was a very controversial choice for the team since Martin was chosen over quarterback Johnny Manziel. However, the Cowboys never had intentions of picking a quarterback and instead, chose someone to protect their current quarterback, Romo. It marks the second consecutive year that they have chosen an offensive lineman with their first pick. Along with Martin, coach Garrett chose defensive end Demarcus Lawrence from Boise State, linebacker Anthony Hitchens from Iowa, and wide receiver Devin Street from Pittsburgh. For the last three picks in the seventh round, the team chose defensive end Ben Gardner from Stanford, linebacker Will Smith from Texas Tech, safety Ahmad Dixon from Baylor, defensive tackle Ken Bishop from Northern Illinois, and cornerback Terrance Mitchell from Oregon. With much conversation going around about Dallas' choices, the fans are ready for the Cowboys to take the field as they play the San Diego Chargers in their preseason game.
