Members of the Northeast Division of the Eastern Conference of the NHL, the Boston Bruins are the league's third oldest team and is the oldest team in the United States. Based in Boston, Massachusetts, the Bruins were founded in 1924 by Charles Adams. Adams persuaded the NHL to give him a franchise for the city of Boston and the team became one of the NHL's first expansion teams, along with the Montréal Maroons. For their first 28 seasons, the Bruins played their games at Boston Garden before moving to their current arena of TD Garden in 1995. In their inaugural years, the team was very successful and won their very first Stanley Cup championship in 1928-1928 followed by their best regular season record the following year. They got their second in 1938-1939 and their third in the following year, making it three Stanley Cup championships out of the six that they currently have. However, 1941 brought about the beginning of World War II which affected the Bruins more so than other teams. They lost some of their key players who enlisted and by 1943, the NHL had been reduced to what they're known as today, “the Original Six.”
These six consisted of the Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, Montréal Canadiens, New York Rangers, and the Toronto Maple Leafs. Along with troubles with the teams and players, Charles' son Weston, had been president since 1936 and was facing financial troubles. He was forced to allow Walter A. Brown to buy the team and during his ownership, the Bruins only had four winning seasons. Amidst the war and the players returning from overseas, history was made in 1958 when Willie O'Ree became the first black person to play in the NHL. But by 1964, Weston bought the team back and went back to helping and rebuilding his team. The 1990's had some goods and some bads, as the team made it to the playoffs every year through the 80's but in 1997, the Bruins didn't make it to the playoffs, making it their first time in 30 years. Into the 21st century, the team saw victory as they won their most recent Stanley Cup Final in 2010-2011. In 2013, Bruins signed on Patrice Bergeron for an 8 year extension with the team, allowing for the team to keep one of the best known players on their team as well as in the league. With their biggest rivals, the Montréal Canadiens, the Bruins prepare for the new season to start and to beat the Canadiens and make their way to the playoffs once again.
